The Sunday Art Show - How to draw a cow head

This week, we draw a mixed media cow head using watercolour marker pens, a flat, clean, wet brush and some atelier interactive acrylic paint. After doing some gestural line work of the cow's head, the clean wet brush is dragged through the watercolour to create some tone. Next, I add some purple lines and follow this with acrylic highlights. Good fun to experiment with unusual colour combinations.

The Sunday Art Show - En Plein Air Seascape Painting

This week we return to the beautiful beach Widemouth bay in Cornwall for a ten minute en plein air mixed media seascape painting. Materials used: Watercolour paper (smooth finish), Winsor and Newton field easel, Winsor and Newton Watercolour marker pens, Winsor and Newton Watercolour paints, Derwent Inktense Blocks, Synthetic flat brushes (1 inch and half inch). Sitting on the sand, work in the open air, I begin having put a few loose lines down with the watercolour marker pen. Next, I block in a few areas of colour with the watercolour paint and follow this with applying the inktense blocks with directly and with a brush. The watercolour markers are used again for a few final lines. This was a really lovely few minutes, sitting in the warm autumn sun, looking out to sea and painting loosely and freely.

The Sunday Art Show - How to paint a white goat in acrylic

This week, I do a goat painting demonstration in response to a viewer request. The materials I use are:
WHSmith Mixed media paper (A3)
Synthetic brushes: half in flat and a small round brush.
Atelier interactive acrylics: cadmium red, cadmium yellow, ultramarine blue, titanium white, burnt umber.
Water spray bottle
I also use the website wheeldecide.com to create a wheel of fortune and use it to decide which colour to use next throughout the video. This results in a slightly different look for this painting compared to my normal style, I really enjoyed using this technique to do a fresh style.
The finished painting is called 'Content with the view' - gestural impressionist painting of a white goat with horns standing in a field, with yellow hills in the background, against a blue sky looking off into the distance. Inspired by a goat in Somerset, England. This picture was created with interactive acrylic paint on mixed media paper and I actually used a wheel of fortune to select colours and the order I used them for the first two thirds of this painting. This resulted in subtly different colour combinations compared to my usual style. You can see the hi-res version of the painting here: click on the image to zoom in on a particular section.

The Sunday Art Show - Using a wheel of fortune to choose colours used in a ballroom dancers Sharpie drawing

Have you ever let fate decide your creative direction? This week I use a wheel of fortune (www.wheeldecide.com) to select 3 colours from a range of Sharpie marker pens. Then I use this colour combination to create a drawing of a pair of ballroom dancers. I start out putting down some loose gestural lines to depict the energy and flow of the dance, next I refine lines with the second colour. Finally, I block in different sections of both male and female dancers using the third and second colours. Here are the materials I used: Daler-Rowney Mixed media paper Sharpie pens reference photo (royalty free) can be found here. see the high resolution version of my drawing here you can click on different sections of the image to see a magnified version of the art work. This is a fun little experiment that can lead to new creative avenues to explore!

The Sunday Art Show - Simple step by step measuring proportions for animal art

Materials needed if you want to follow along: Photo of an animal of choice, paper or canvas, drawing medium of choice, 3 colours would be useful (I use a Sharpie pen in this video), a spare long-handled brush (or a stick would do). In this week's video, I demonstrate, with help from Exmouth Art Group, a simple two box method for quickly getting the proportions of animals accurate. Working on a drawing of a cow, I start by using the classic, thumb on brush measuring technique then transfer these measurements into drawing a well-proportioned box that will contain the whole animal. Next, I do the same style measurements for the head of the animal allowing me to draw a second box within the first. You can also see how this technique works for members of Exmouth Art Group who attended a workshop I ran on painting animals.

The Sunday Art Show - Black Cow in Landscape Painting

In this real time acrylic painting video I create a painting of a black cow lying down in amongst the heather and gorse up on Dartmoor in Devon. This landscape animal painting features impressionist style distant hills and plants along with a precisely painted cow. Using Atelier interactive acrylics throughout, this video has no soundtrack, so you can just sit back and enjoy the painting of this black cow come to life. This video acts as a tutorial for both landscape and animal paintings.

The Sunday Art Show - Watercolour and acrylic - Deer painting - Perfectly Poised

This week it's a real time video of a mixed media, watercolour and acrylic painting of a deer with antlers standing with perfect graceful posture, alert yet relaxed in a woodland glade perhaps. Prussian blue watercolour marker was used to create a gestural line drawing of the deer, then more watercolour lines, dragged through with a clean wet brush introduced soft-edged patches of background colour. Next, acrylic paint was added to the deer to provide bold shadows, light and form in contrast to the gentler background. Hope you enjoy the creation of this vividly coloured, impressionist style deer painting.

The Sunday Art Show - Herd of cows drawing tutorial - purple cows on a bag

Forgot to publish this last week! In this week's episode, I use mixed media to draw a herd of friesian cows. However, these are rather unusual in that I depict them with bright purple! Starting with a prussian blue acrylic paint marker, I do some loose gestural drawing to place the cows in the field, letting the lines freely wander to create a sense of movement and expression. Next, a mauve watercolour marker is used to block in the dark areas of each cow. Following this, a wet but clean flat brush is lightly dragged through the purple patches to create more subtle shadows and areas of texture. Finally, I preview the design on a tote bag.

The Sunday Art Show - How to Paint a Sheep in Ten Minutes

In this video, I create a vibrantly coloured acrylic painting of a sheep in about 10 minutes using atelier interactive acrylics. The great thing about the ten minute painting challenge is that is forces you to work quickly and efficiently and really examine your own technique. For this sheep, I used some ultramarine and cobalt blues, cadmium red, cadmium yellow, burnt umber and titanium white. So, if you want to know how to paint a sheep quickly, this sheep painting tutorial may be for you.

The Sunday Art Show - Sketchbook reviewing the use of red and gold Liquitex acrylic paint markers

I start this video by showing an example of my typical painting style with a picture of a belted galloway cow. Then I talk through a quick tour of my recent drawing and sketching using Liquitex acrylic paint markers. A range of subjects are explored, landscapes, seascapes, cities, still life, dancers and even a cow but all using a red and gold colour scheme. These Red And Gold Experiments are a good example of how I periodically move away from my habitual work patterns to find new techniques.
