The Sunday Art Show - Using a wheel of fortune to choose colours used in a ballroom dancers Sharpie drawing

Have you ever let fate decide your creative direction? This week I use a wheel of fortune (www.wheeldecide.com) to select 3 colours from a range of Sharpie marker pens. Then I use this colour combination to create a drawing of a pair of ballroom dancers. I start out putting down some loose gestural lines to depict the energy and flow of the dance, next I refine lines with the second colour. Finally, I block in different sections of both male and female dancers using the third and second colours. Here are the materials I used: Daler-Rowney Mixed media paper Sharpie pens reference photo (royalty free) can be found here. see the high resolution version of my drawing here you can click on different sections of the image to see a magnified version of the art work. This is a fun little experiment that can lead to new creative avenues to explore!

The Sunday Art Show - en plein air surfer seascape painting

Materials used: Daler Rowney Mixed media art boards, Winsor and Newton field easel, Derwent Inktense blocks, Atelier interactive acrylics, winsor and newton watercolour marker pens.
This week I'm back at Fistral Beach in Cornwall creating an en plein air mixed media study of a surfer walking back up the beach from the sea. I start with inktense blocks to create a series of washes, switch to acrylics for the rest of the painting and add a few finishing touches with some watercolour markers. The Sunday Art Show - Simple step by step measuring proportions for animal art

Materials needed if you want to follow along: Photo of an animal of choice, paper or canvas, drawing medium of choice, 3 colours would be useful (I use a Sharpie pen in this video), a spare long-handled brush (or a stick would do). In this week's video, I demonstrate, with help from Exmouth Art Group, a simple two box method for quickly getting the proportions of animals accurate. Working on a drawing of a cow, I start by using the classic, thumb on brush measuring technique then transfer these measurements into drawing a well-proportioned box that will contain the whole animal. Next, I do the same style measurements for the head of the animal allowing me to draw a second box within the first. You can also see how this technique works for members of Exmouth Art Group who attended a workshop I ran on painting animals.

The Sunday Art Show - En Plein Air Watercolour Painting at Widemouth Bay in Cornwall

In this week's episode, I am sitting on the sand at Widemouth Bay beach in Cornwall painting an en plein air seascape using Winsor and Newton watercolour paint and synthetic brushes. Once I'm back home, I add a couple of finishing touches with some acrylic. Had great fun filming this on an unexpectedly hot and sunny October afternoon. Here's the link to the Chrissycanvasart youtube channel that I mention in the video: https://www.youtube.com/chrissycanvasart
