The Sunday Art Show - Sky Arts Portrait Artist of the Week - Melanie Blatt
See the finished painting here: https://mike-jory.pixels.com/featured/melanie-blatt-portrait-artist-of-the-week-mike-jory.html This week's video is a real time demo of a portrait painting of All Saints singer /songwriter Melanie Blatt. I created this for episode 3 of Sky Arts, Portrait Artist of the Week, season 2. I begin with a loose pencil sketch, then go over this and correct as I go using a blue watercolor marker pen followed by a gray marker. The sketching portion is shown in time lapse but after this short section, the video switches to real time and I talk through my thought process and show painting and paint mixing every step of the way as I apply interactive acrylics to mixed media paper. Materials used: 7B graphite pencil, blue and grey Winsor & Newton watercolour marker pens, A2 Daler Rowney mixed media paper, synthetic brushes (flats approx half inch and 3/4 inch and a small filbert), interactive acrylics by Chroma (alizarin crimson, french ultramarine blue, cadmium yellow light, burnt umber, titanium white) #PAOTW #myPAOTW

The Sunday Art Show - Rame Head in Cornwall Painting - How to paint a stormy coastal scene
This week, we are down on the south coast of Cornwall on a very windy and stormy day, looking over Whitsand Bay to Rame Head and the ancient chapel that sits on the cliff top there. I use watercolor paints to create a range of textures in a multi-layered style to capture the flat, diffuse light that occurs in cloudy stormy weather in England. I decide to go surreal and paint some very loose impressionist flowers and plants using watercolor on a large canvas to paint en plein air an arrangement of intertwined flora. Then using watercolor marker pen and a touch of interactive acrylic, I add 5 belted galloway cows amongst the garden life, including one tiny cow atop the highest flower, hence "reaching new heights"! When the Covid-19 pandemic hit and the UK went into lockdown in early 2020, Oxford portrait artist Tom Croft (check out his website here: http://www.thomascroft.co.uk/ ) responded by creating a movement that would celebrate the most heroic people during this difficult time. Portraits for NHS Heroes used social media to pair artists across the UK (and the World) with key workers in the NHS. This video gives you a glimpse of the impact of the movement, a look at Tom's work and also details how I created a portrait painting for an NHS key worker.
