The Sunday Art Show - Wild horse and foal painting demo

In this week's video, I show you how to paint a horse and foal using interactive acrylic paint. This demo starts with an A2 sheet of mixed media paper and a pre-prepared outline drawing that I did with a burnt umber acrylic paint marker. Next I add a couple of wet in wet washes of acrylic paint to create a soft textured background. Following completion of the background, I show you how I approach painting the horse and foal using wet in wet techniques.
Materials used: Daler Rowney mixed media paper, Liquitex acrylic paint marker, flat and round synthetic acrylic brushes, Atelier interactive acrylics: titanium white, permanent alizarine, phthalo blue, cadmium yellow, cadmium yellow deep, burnt umber, water spray

different ways to draw impalas - animal alphabet challenge - episode i

This week, I show you a few different ways to draw an impala. Using a sharpie marker pen and some mixed media paper, I start with a fairly careful depiction of the full impala, sketching in everything from antlers to feet and then use cross hatching and dots to add tone. Next I show you a loose gestural sketch of an impala head and neck and antlers, keeping things fluid and using only partial outline. The third technique, I show you how to quickly apply a simple tonal treatment to draw an impala at the water's edge. You can see two of the finished drawings here:

The Sunday Art Show - En Plein Air Flower painting

This week, I create a mixed media painting inspired by the flowers in my garden. Working en plein air I draw and paint flowers and plants using Sharpie markers, inktense pencils, interference acrylics, interactive acrylics and acrylic paint marker pens on A2 mixed media paper. The finished painting is a stylised, vibrant depiction of roses, hydrangea and string of pearls plants. The Sunday Art Show - impressionist sheep painting & en plein air sketches

This week, I start with several biro (ball-point) pen sketches of sheep, working en plein air on an A4 mixed media paper pad, I stand at the gate to a field on the outskirts of Exeter and draw the flock, several quick studies. Then, I head home and start working on a much larger (A1 mixed media paper) painting with a watercolour marker pen. I add to the initial drawing using washes of inktense pencils dilute with a clean wet brush. After the inktense is dry, I then use Atelier interactive acrylics to bring the painting of sheep in the Devon landscape to life, keeping things loose and gestural in an impressionism style.
